About
I write books and journalism, contributing to The Times, The FT, BBC Culture, World of Interiors, The Telegraph, the TLS, the V&A magazine and RPS Journal. My book about women painters came out in March and my biography of Mabel Pryde Nicholson in July. I’m currently working on a book about Marie Antoinette’s favourite painter, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, for the National Gallery.
I also write catalogue essays for museums including the National Portrait Gallery, the Barbican and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National, Madrid, and work with galleries, artists and photographers on web content, exhibition texts, forewords and publicity materials. I cut and edit manuscripts for both authors and publishers.
Between 2003 and 2022 I worked at The Telegraph, where I was visual arts editor and a features writer, and before that for a Modern and Impressionist art dealer.
